Peering Past the Veil: What a Medium Must Prepare Against

In Soul Licensed: Tips and Tales, author David Tuttle lays out his spiritual journey from being a layperson without attunement to the spiritual realm to becoming a prominent medium and master of Reiki.
Yet, peering past the veil couldn’t have been easy for him and many others. There is still much to be learned about the spiritual aspects of life. And there is no doubt that humans have only scratched the mere surface of everything.
Within just the physical world, there are dangers–what more within the spiritual? So, let’s touch upon the possible dangers and obstacles mediums must face when they conduct their practices.
Enlightened Spirit: The Medium & Their Power
According to David Tuttle, the body is comprised of energy. As such, it is pertinent for any prospective medium (or anyone who wants to live a good life, really) to be mindful of things that may affect and disrupt that energy. You see, as with all things in this magnificent world, the body works in conjunction with a myriad of things–if only one thing is out of sync across these variables, everything is out of alignment, and the whole structure of body, spirit, and mind quivers and shakes; and in the most pressing of cases, vanishes altogether completely.
Only when these things are in complete unity with one another are they able to direct you to your spiritual goals. When one begins their spiritual journey, they allow themselves to see the completeness of the world, peering past the veil and perceiving the totality of existence–if only in brief glimpses. Therefore, people who have opened up their spiritual senses and have acquired the necessary willpower and training to communicate with those who cannot be seen through mortal eyes are called “mediums.”
The medium has many powers at its disposal, but it is most known for its ability to act as a bridge between the spiritual and corporeal world, hence its name. By channeling their energy to commune with the unseen world, they are able to communicate with spirits, the dead, angels, and other powerful entities beyond the perception of mortal man.

Peering Past the Veil: Unseen Dangers
While they are gifted with skills beyond the mortal ken of most people, being a medium is not without its burdens and heartaches. Just as a bridge is not invulnerable, so too is the medium beset with many tribulations.
The Emotional Distress
As a medium, the strength of will is quite important not only in resisting the darker aspects of the spiritual world but in just interacting with one’s clients. The vast majority of people looking for the services of a medium are people who are desperately looking for answers and closure–people who have lost loved ones or people trying to reconnect. This places an undue burden on the medium, both spiritually and mentally. If enough people walk over it, eventually, a bridge will become worn and then collapse if left untended. The same goes for mediums; taking on the overwhelming negativity of people takes its toll–that is why it’s important as a medium to take some time off to care for themselves.
The Physical Toll
There is also the possibility of bodily exhaustion. Though the medium’s abilities stem from the spirit, the after-effects of their usage bleed out and affect the body as well. Excessive use of one’s spiritual powers can potentially have lasting and debilitating impacts on the body; in the worst of cases, death might even be possible. Therefore, it is critical for mediums to not only deal with the emotional aspects of their being but also with the physical aspects.
The Spiritual Threats
Perhaps the greatest danger with being a medium is the very thing that divides them from regular people: the spiritual world. Whatever they may be, there is a reason why it takes intense and dedicated effort to even take one step in crossing the veil. While angels and benevolent spirits exist unseen alongside the corporeal world, the spiritual realm is also host to plenty of malignant entities (often due to their very nature). As such, a medium has to be especially careful when they reach out beyond the veil for fear of attracting these dark denizens and inviting conflict to your soul–the outcomes of which warrant another article in and of itself.
